About the OIN Team

The Okta Integration Network (OIN) is the platform that lets Okta customers discover, connect, and manage third-party applications and identity providers — from single sign-on and provisioning to newer, higher-order integration patterns as the ecosystem of connected software (including AI agents) continues to grow. It's core infrastructure: the workflows OIN powers run continuously for a very large share of Okta's customer base.

Our team builds and operates all of OIN — from the foundational data model, APIs, and security posture every integration in the network is built on, to the tools partners and customers use to build, test, and ship integrations, to the systems that power what those integrations can actually do once connected. In practice that spans connector metadata and provisioning primitives, partner-facing tooling, and the infrastructure work that keeps a very large, long-lived system fast, secure, and easy to extend as the network grows.

We're actively expanding OIN's scope beyond its original SSO-and-provisioning core — including new integration patterns as AI agents and machine-to-machine access become part of the identity landscape, and a lower-friction path for partners to bring new integrations into the network. You'd be joining at a point where the platform's scope is visibly widening, working closely with product, architecture, and design to help figure out what "right" looks like as much as building it.

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on the OIN team, you'll be a technical leader for a platform a very large share of Okta's customers depend on every day. You'll independently own complex, ambiguous problems end-to-end — from technical scoping through design, delivery, and production operation — partnering closely with product, architecture, and design to help figure out what "right" looks like as much as building it. You'll also be expected to raise the technical bar for the engineers around you, not just deliver your own code.

We're looking for self-motivated engineers who think from first principles, take pride in high-quality software, and are genuinely kind and collaborative to work with.

What you'll be doing

• Lead discovery and technical scoping for new requirements, turning ambiguous product asks into a concrete architecture, phased delivery plans, and credible estimates, in close partnership with product, architecture, and design.
• Design and evolve the APIs, data models, and security posture that OIN's integrations depend on, with an eye toward backward compatibility and long-term extensibility.
• Drive technical decisions across ambiguous, multi-team dependencies, aligning stakeholders across engineering, product, and other parts of the business when the "right answer" isn't obvious yet.
• Modernize and evolve a large, long-lived production system incrementally without disrupting the customers and integrations that depend on it every day.
• Maintain a high bar for security, testing, and code quality, including vulnerability remediation and threat-aware design, while keeping a real sense of urgency on customer-impacting work.
• Own the production health of the systems you build by writing root-cause analyses when things break, driving follow-through on the fixes, and building the observability that prevents repeat incidents.
• Champion AI-native engineering practices by using AI coding assistants and AI-augmented workflows as a core part of how you design, build, review, and ship software, and helping the team adopt them well.
• Mentor and raise the technical bar for the engineers around you, and represent the team's technical point of view in cross-functional forums.

What you'll bring to the role

• 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a demonstrated history of technical leadership and mentorship.
• Deep proficiency in Java (our primary backend language) or a comparable strongly-typed backend language/framework, with the judgment to know when and how to modernize a large, long-lived codebase without disrupting the customers depending on it.
• Proven experience designing, building, and operating complex, large-scale distributed systems in a cloud environment (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including caching, asynchronous processing, and data migrations at scale.
• Real depth in identity and access protocols (OAuth 2.0/OIDC, SAML, and/or SCIM) and the security instincts that come from having built systems that other companies' software authenticates against.
• Experience designing and evolving APIs and integration frameworks that external developers or partners build on, not just internal consumers. You think about backward compatibility, versioning, and developer experience as first-class concerns.
• Comfortable driving technical direction across ambiguous, multi-team dependencies. You can align product, architecture, and other engineering teams around a plan when the "right answer" isn't obvious yet.
• A security- and compliance-aware mindset — comfortable working on systems where correctness failures have real customer or compliance consequences, not just availability ones.
• Applies AI tools thoughtfully across the development lifecycle, from code generation to review to testing, and can help a team adopt them well, not just use them personally.
• Excellent written communication — you bring structure to ambiguous problems and drive them to closure using first principles, in writing that others can act on without you in the room.

Extra credit

• Experience integrating with large, specialized third-party enterprise systems that carry their own strict compliance or data-handling requirements.
• Experience running or contributing to a self-serve developer platform or partner/ISV ecosystem.
• Front-end proficiency (React or similar) is a big positive.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Below is the annual salary range for candidates located in Canada. Your actual salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, RRSP with a match, healthcare spending, telemedicine, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in Canada is between:$160,000—$220,000 CAD
