Remote work did not die in security - it consolidated. As of late July 2026, 296 of the 1,029 live security roles we track are fully remote: 29%. That share has held steady all year while the total board grew, which tells you remote security hiring is a structural feature of the market, not a pandemic leftover. This guide is the measured picture: which specializations hire remote, which companies, what it actually pays, where the regional seats are, and how to compete for one. All numbers come from live postings across 246 security employers, captured 2026-07-30.

Which security jobs actually go remote

Remote share is not evenly distributed. From our live index, the specializations with the most fully-remote openings right now:

  • Security Engineering - 54 remote roles (browse)
  • Application Security - 43 (browse)
  • Detection Engineering & SOC - 30 (browse)
  • GRC & Compliance - 29 (browse)
  • Threat Intelligence - 24 (browse)
  • AI Security - 23 (browse)
  • Offensive Security - 17, Cloud Security - 17, Identity & Access - 15

The pattern: work that lives in tooling, code, and evidence travels well. Work that lives in a badge-access building (OT/ICS, some government and defense seats) does not. If your goal is a remote career, AppSec, detection, GRC, and security engineering are the four widest doors.

The companies hiring remote security people right now

The employers with the most fully-remote security openings on our board this month: GuidePoint Security (23 remote roles - a security consultancy, which is a category worth noting for remote hunters), CrowdStrike (20), Zscaler (18), Vanta (14), Twilio (12), Chainguard (12), ClickHouse (11), and Wiz (10). Security vendors themselves are the most remote-friendly employers in tech: their products are cloud services and their customers are everywhere. Consultancies and MDR providers are the under-rated second category - the work is inherently distributed across client sites, so the team is too.

What remote security work pays

Remote security roles disclose pay more often than the market overall - 20% of remote postings publish a band versus 14% across the whole board. From the 51 remote roles currently disclosing a band, the midpoint distribution:

  • All remote roles: median $190,000, with the middle half between $145,000 and $260,000
  • US-scoped remote roles (35 of the 51): median $230,000, middle half $162,000 to $298,000

Read those numbers with the disclosure bias in mind: the companies that publish bands skew senior and well-funded, so the true market median sits below these. But the direction is real - remote does not mean discounted in security. Employers pay the band for the market they hire in, and a US-remote seat pays like a US seat. Remote by country and region

"Remote" almost never means "from anywhere." Most listings name a country for payroll, work authorization, or time-zone overlap. Where the current remote seats are scoped:

And the cut no single country page can show: region-scoped listings. Many employers hire "Remote - EMEA" or across a set of European countries in one posting. We now aggregate those on dedicated region pages: remote cybersecurity jobs in Europe (61 roles right now), Asia-Pacific (13), and Latin America (8). If you are outside the US, the Europe page is the single highest-density remote surface we publish.

The honest entry-level number

Here is the stat most remote-jobs content will not print: of the 296 fully-remote security roles live today, only 4 are explicitly entry-level or internships, and three of those are Zscaler SkillBridge internships reserved for transitioning US military members. Remote entry-level security jobs barely exist, because remote work removes exactly the thing juniors need most: someone senior nearby. If you are breaking in, plan for the first role to be on-site or hybrid - SOC seats, MSSPs, IT-adjacent doorways - and make remote the year-three move, not the year-zero one. The full strategy is in how to get into cybersecurity → and the (honest, short) list of true entry seats is at entry-level cybersecurity jobs.

How to actually land a remote security role

Remote roles draw multiples of the applicants an on-site role gets, so the bar moves from "can do the job" to "provably works this way." What moves the needle, from the hiring side:

  • Written evidence beats interview claims. Remote security work runs on writing: incident timelines, detection documentation, audit evidence, threat reports. A public artifact - a detection repo, a write-up, a homelab post - is the strongest possible signal you can produce, because it is the job.
  • Match the time zone before you apply. A listing scoped "Remote - EMEA" with a US-based team usually means 3+ hours of daily overlap. Applications that acknowledge the overlap window read as senior; ones that ignore it get filtered.
  • Mind work authorization, not just geography. Remote listings still require the legal right to work in the named country - an employer hiring "Remote - Netherlands" cannot payroll you in another country without an entity there. Read the fine print before spending an application.
  • Target the disclosure-friendly employers. Companies that publish salary bands correlate strongly with mature remote practice - async-first culture, documented processes, real equipment budgets. The band is a signal beyond the number.

Working the board like the power users do

The most successful visitors we see treat the remote hub as a daily check: filter to a specialization, open the new listings, bookmark candidates with the save button (the shortlist lives at /saved, no account needed), and apply directly - every listing links to the employer's own careers site, no middleman. A weekly job alert covers the days you do not check. Numbers on this page are a frozen July 30 snapshot; the hub always shows the live counts.
